5:15 p.m.: The Indian government said that it has developed a vaccine to fight bird flu. "It is a significant research breakthrough. The vaccine has been developed in just four months of the bird flu outbreak in India," Agriculture minister Sharad Pawar said. He said the vaccine has been developed by High-Security Animal Disease Laboratory in Bhopal. So far, the government was relying on imported vaccines to fight the avian flu.

8:30 p.m.: A 44-year-old man died of bird flu in Indonesia, a senior health official said Sunday, putting the country on the cusp of being the world's hardest hit by the disease. The man died July 12 after being hospitalized for two days with high fever, coughing and breathing difficulties, said the official, Nyoman Kandun. If confirmed by a World Health Organization-sanctioned test, the number of people killed by bird flu in Indonesia rise to at least 42, tying it with hardest-hit Vietnam.

12:05 p.m.: Analysis of H5N1 samples taken from the Indonesian family cluster showed multiple genetic mutations as the virus spread through the family. One of the victims, a father who is thought to have caught the virus from his son, accumulated 21 mutations across seven of eight flu genes. Declan Butler wrote about the mutations for the journal Nature and offered excerpts on his blog.

9:20 a.m.: Indonesia is set to eclipse Vietnam as the country with the most human fatalities from bird flu. The WHO confirmed that a three-year-old girl in Indonesian died of bird flu, bringing the human death toll there to 41. Vietnam has reported 42 fatalities. More.
