11:35 a.m.: Indonesia reported that a three-year-old girl who died near the capital Jakarta tested positive for H5N1 in local tests. The girl, identified only as AA, is thought to have had contact with birds, an Indonesian health official said.

10:50 a.m.: Merriam-Webster added the term "avian influenza" to the 11th edition of its collegiate dictionary, due to hit bookstores this fall. The wordsmiths at Merriam-Webster define the term as "a highly variable mild to fulminant influenza of birds that is caused by strains of the influenza A virus which may mutate and be transmitted to other vertebrates -- called also bird flu." 12:05 a.m.: The European Commission banned the import of South African flightless birds -- including ostriches and emus -- and their eggs, meat and meat products until Oct. 30 following an outbreak of bird flu in the country's Western Cape province.
