1:45 p.m.: The World Bank said at the bird-flu conference in Paris that a severe human pandemic could cost the global economy as much as $2 trillion, or 3.1% of the world's gross domestic product. The severe pandemic scenario is based on a 1% mortality rate, or about 70 million people.

10:15 a.m.: A U.S. Treasury official warned that businesses need to go further in pandemic preparedness. It's not enough to simply move employees to facilities in other areas, Scott Parsons, deputy assistant Treasury secretary for critical infrastructure and protection, told a House subcommittee. Contingency plans should also include measures to stem the spread of bird flu within a department or business by adequately stocking masks, gloves, antiviral agents and other gear, as well as permitting telecommuting.

9:05 a.m.: The National Zoo in Washington, D.C., has temporarily moved chickens and ducks at its Kids' Farm exhibit to a facility in Front Royal, Va., as a precautionary measure against bird flu, the Washington Post reported. The U.S. hasn't reported any cases of bird flu, but the zoo wanted to curb the exhibit since it permits close contact between humans and birds.

8:45 a.m.: Europe is expected to unveil a bird-flu task force to fight H5N1 across the continent, the AFP news service reported. The plan, discussed at the bird-flu conference in Paris, is still being developed, but is expected to bring scientists, doctors and animal-health specialists together to advise policy makers.
