Thursday, June 8

12:20 p.m.: Smithfield Foods shares skidded 4% after the world's largest pork processor reported its profit plunged to $1.1 million in the fiscal fourth quarter from $85.4 million a year earlier as bloated meat inventories in the U.S. -- largely due to avian-flu fears outside the U.S. – pounded meat prices. Industry analysts said diet trends such as the move away from high-protein, low-carbohydrate meals played a lesser role.

9:10 a.m.: A new U.S. rule published Wednesday means that, in the event of a public health emergency, suspected victims will no longer have to grant permission before experimental tests can be run to determine why they're sick. Privacy experts called the exception unnecessary, ripe for abuse and an override of state informed-consent laws.

9 a.m.: The CDC said U.S. states preparing for a possible pandemic should focus on containment as a vaccine wouldn't be available for several months after a pandemic begins. Containment would help medical centers which would likely experience shortages in staff, supplies, beds and medicine, CDC Director Julie Gerberding said.

8:45 a.m.: China reported a new outbreak of H5N1 in poultry at a farm in Hetian county in the Xinjiang region of western China. The government didn't specify when the birds fell sick or how many were infected.
