Monday, May 8.

2:40 p.m.: A U.N. crisis-management center to coordinate international efforts against the spread of bird flu will be opened within a month, a USDA official said.

The center, at the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome, will dispatch response teams to countries where bird flu is detected in animals and will channel aid, experts and equipment to areas where they are most needed, the USDA said. The U.S. has allocated $4.2 million to start the center and the U.S. is urging other nations to pitch in.

9:55 a.m.: A new test will allow the government to test poultry meat for the H5N1 strain of bird flu, offering consumers an added assurance about eating chicken. Until now, the USDA could only test birds by examining secretions and body cavities; the new test will allow for the testing of meat directly. The global outbreak of H5N1 has hurt poultry sales world-wide, especially in countries that have reported outbreaks.

7:15 a.m.: WHO tests confirmed an Indonesian man has died of H5N1, the 25th death from the disease in the country, health officials said. The 30-year-old man died on April 26 after coming into contact with poultry in Tangerang, a city 25 miles west of Jakarta.
