Only half the world's human bird flu cases are being reported to the WHO within two weeks of being detected  a response time that must be improved to avert a pandemic, senior WHO official said in Vietnam. Shigeru Omi, WHO's regional director for the Western Pacific, said it is estimated that countries would have only two to three weeks to stamp out, or at least slow, a pandemic strain after it began spreading in humans.

The Chinese government reported an outbreak of bird flu in remote western China after 125 wild birds were found dead. The Ministry of Agriculture, in a statement on its Web site, said that deaths among the wild birds were first detected on April 23. Samples sent to a government laboratory confirmed on Wednesday that the birds were infected with H5N1, the statement said.
