Indonesia aims to limit spread of bird flu
posted by admin on 19/01/07

JAKARTA, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Indonesia is taking new measures, including the culling of chicken flocks, to try to stop the spread of the bird flu virus.

The government is implementing more stringent local regulations on the raising of poultry, and destroying tens of thousands of chickens, the Voice of America reported.

Aburizal Bakrie, coordinating minister for social welfare, said many Indonesians have begun doing their part in the effort to contain the H5N1 virus.

"They're handing over their chickens, they're handing over their birds, they kill their birds themselves and they kill their birds themselves before the government takes it away from them," he said.

More than 161 avian flu-related deaths have been reported worldwide. More than 60 of them were in Indonesia, earning the nation a reputation as being lax against the virus.

Bakrie said the major issue in the spread of the virus is the prevalence of backyard flocks of bird throughout the country, Voice of American reported.
