New bird flu cases seen in Indonesia
posted by admin on 22/08/06

JAKARTA, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Three additional suspected bird-flu patients were being treated in a hospital in Indonesia's West Java.

The Antara news agency said the latest patient was admitted Friday, but two other apparent bird-flu patients were admitted at the hospital in Bandung Wednesday and Thursday.

The avian influenza, or H5N1 virus, has killed at least 140 people worldwide since it began ravaging Asian poultry stocks in late 2003; and 46 of the deaths occurred in Indonesia, the world's worst affected country, the World Health Organization says.

The risk from avian influenza is generally low for most people. However, most cases have occurred when people are in close contact with infected poultry or surfaces contaminated with secretions or excretions from infected birds, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
