India regains bird flu free nation status
posted by admin on 16/08/06

India has declared itself as an avian influenza free country.

NEW DELHI: India has regained its status of a bird flu free nation that existed before the outbreak of the disease in February this year. No case of the disease has been reported since the last outbreak on April 18, which took place in the Jalgaon district of Maharashtra.

"We have regained the bird flu free status that existed before the outbreak of the disease earlier this year," said S K Bandyopadhyay, Animal Husbandry Commissioner.

He said India has declared itself as an avian influenza free country following no outbreak of bird flu case for almost four months. The final report in this regard was sent by Department of Animal Husbandry to Office International des Epizooties (OIE) (World Organisation of Animal Health) on August 11.

Though the country has declared itself free from the highly pathogenic Avian Influenza, he said, "we will continue to undertake surveillance".

On February 18, India notified the OIE of such an outbreak in Navapur and Ucchal areas of Maharashtra and Gujarat. Further outbreaks were notified in Jalgaon district of Maharashtra, with a spillover into Madhya Pradesh.

"There has been no further outbreak of Avian Influenza since April 18, 2006", he said.
