11 a.m.: Update. A 16-year-old Indonesian boy died late Monday, after local laboratory results showed he tested positive for bird flu, health officials said. The death makes Indonesisa the nation hardest hit by bird flu, bringing the human tally to 43, nearly a third of which have occurred over the last year. Neighboring Vietnam is the second worst hit at 42, but it hasn't recorded any new deaths this year. Additional tests were needed to confirm the results, but preliminary findings showed that the boy contracted the potentially fatal illness from sick chickens in the West Java district of Bekasi, east of the capital, Jakarta.

10 a.m.: Spain lifted protective measures adopted after its first case of H5N1 bird flu was detected last month, an official said Monday. No further cases of the virus had been detected since it was found in a marshland outside the northern city of Vitoria on July 7, regional agriculture, fisheries and food official Gonzalo Saenz de Samaniego said. No human H5N1 cases have yet been reported in Europe, but surveillance for the virus has been heightened significantly in recent months.
